Renvela (Sevelamer)  is a type of medicine known as a phosphate binder. that binds to (or holds on to) phosphorus in the foods you eat so your body doesn’t absorb as much. Sevelamer works by inhibiting the absorption of phosphate from the intestine and lower the phosphate levels in the blood.

It helps prevent hypocalcemia (low levels of calcium in the body) caused by elevated phosphorus levels in the blood in patients who are on dialysis due to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Dialysis removes some phosphate from your blood, but it is difficult to remove enough to keep your phosphate levels balanced. Decreasing blood phosphate levels can help keep your bones strong, prevent unsafe buildup of minerals in your body, and possibly decrease the risk of heart disease and strokes that can result from high phosphate levels.
